Beautiful Birds of Autumn


During the 2013 autumn season, I have visited many different areas in search of beautiful birds. Below I feature several birds seen over the past few months.


A stunning male Wood Duck wades in North Pond


A lovely sight ~ Black-throated Green Warbler


A striking Carolina Wren fluffs its feathers


Feeding amid the leaves ~ Magnolia Warbler


A handsome Black-throated Blue Warbler searches for insects


A glimpse of a slow-moving Black-billed Cuckoo


Delighting in dogwood berries ~ Warbling Vireo


A common autumn sight ~ Golden-crowned Kinglet


A stately Great Blue Heron walks amongst the lily pads


The vibrant throat feathers of a male Common Yellowthroat


Scanning the nature preserve ~ Red-tailed Hawk


A lone Harris's Sparrow seen feeding at North Pond ~ Life Bird!


Two elegant American Avocets search for sustenance in the shallows ~ Life bird!

    i tried to pick a favorite, really i did, but they are all so amazing!!

    that red tailed hawk, SUPER IMPRESSIVE!!

    such beautiful warblers. love that cuckoo! we only see yellow-billed here so he was a treat! and your kinglet shot is FABULOUS!!!

    Your post coming up on my sidebar is always a joyful thing! You show here again some very rare and excellent shots of quite a variety. The cuckoo's red circled eye so well kept!And for being able to capture the red tailed hawk the way you did; that's having LUCK!

    Wonderful all these amazing colored birds. So special and fantastic to see them. Shot 2 of the Green Warbler is great and what a good shot of the Hawk.

    What a lovely series of autumn bird pictures. I've never seen a Harris's Sparrow before, is it rare?

  18. Gorgeous images, Julie. Congrats on the Harris's Sparrow. Love to see those birds. We don't see them often, but usually a few passing through in the spring and the fall. And you found American Avocets as well! When they are here they have their cinnamon breeding colours. Another of my favorites.

  28. Stunning photography of beautiful birds, Julie! Most of the images are clear and crisp photos, but I wonder if a few of them are paintings or photos, for example No. 5 perhaps due to the bokeh effect. The combination of photography and birding is such an exciting, healing, creative, and healthy activity. I’m happy to be shared your wonderful experiences with as always. Have a nice December.

  36. Thank you! The Harris's Sparrow is not commonly seen in my area. It winters in the central region of the United States and breeds in Canada.
